Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." - John 4:14 (NIV)
In a jungle seemingly unexplored, except by its native people, an explorer searches out a spring of water, said to give extended life and power to everyone who drinks of it. As the explorer walks through the dense, hot and humid jungle, he pulls out a long machete and hacks away at the thick vines that block him from going through the path that his map directs him to go, while avoiding snakes and other creatures that the natives warned him about. After about two hours into his journey, the explorer realizes that for the last mile he has been going around in a circle, which causes fear to overwhelm him. Immediately, he begins to retrace his steps to see where he went wrong, as the day slowly fades away. Worn out and weary, he decides to build a shelter to rest for the night. When morning comes, he tries to retrace his steps again, which only causes him to go deeper into the jungle. Now, the journey that was supposed to take hours has turned into three days. His fear increases. He is weak from hunger and dehydration, and it seems as if all hope is lost. As he tries to walk, his legs give-way and he passes out on the jungle floor. When he finally comes to his senses, he hears a faint sound of water splashing from a distance. After hearing this, he begins to crawl toward the sound, and there it is, not even a hundred feet away, the spring that he has been longing to find. He gulps down as much water as he can, when his thirst is quenched, he realizes that the water does extend life and give power, because it kept him from dying of dehydration, as any drinkable water would do. He was satisfied temporarily, only to thirst again.
If we live our lives fully grounded in Christ, we are God's native people. As God's natives, we need to be about our Father's business and lead the lost explorers to the One who gives living water. Lost explorers search out things like physics, astrologers, mediums, cults, and so forth to satisfy a spiritual void in their lives. They do not know that if they continue in these things that they are dying from spiritual dehydration, because what they learn and hear from these things are doctrines that Satan sets up to drain the life right out of a person. For a while, these unknown lies of the enemy will satisfy their thirst, but in the end if these people never get to know Jesus - The Source for them to thirst no more, then they will spent eternity in hell never being able to get even a sip of water from His cup. So let us preach the good news that has the power to quench the spiritual thirst of all whom are lost.
