There are some great artists who you discover from being featured on the projects of your favorite artists and then there are those that seem to come out of nowhere and just blow you away. That's how I would describe up and comer ZG. I first learned of him after listening to Yung Prince's (another great up and comer) mixtape titled "The Pre-Lease". He's featured on the song titled "What Am I". I loved it, but then when I heard him do a cover of Chris Brown's "Deuces", that's when just I lost it. I had no know more about him. I did my research and have been hooked ever since. You all are familiar with him now. In fact, Alcam dropped a single featuring him just today. Everybody, including myself, has been wanting to know more about him and his music, so I caught up with him to discuss just that. Check it out.
Zema: Who is ZG?
ZG: I'm still trying to figure that out myself. Lol. ZG is a young man who enjoys even the thought of music. ZG is a normal being with the same struggles & victories as any other man.
Zema: That's wassup! What are some of your hobbies?
ZG: I absolutely love basketball. I went to college (McPherson College) on a basketball scholarship. Reading poetry is another hobby of mine. What are yours? Lol
Zema: Believe me, there's a reason why you're the one being interviewed. haha How did the Lord bring you to the music scene?
ZG: I came to the Lord unusually. Many people find Christ from a loss, from destruction inside [the] home, failures of marriage, etc; I came to the Lord from an opportunity to make music for Him. Crazy huh? I wasn't
feeling it at first. I begin to sing it. Then write about a God I didnt know. I felt ridiculous....singing and not living it. So I begin to live it. That's when God became real to me.
Zema: That's a testimony, bro! Who are some of your favorite artists and why?
ZG: My favorite artist of all time is Jamie Foxx. Notice I said "artist", not role model. Lol. He and I are a lot alike. Really goofy, wanting to make people laugh. But what I love most is his musicianship. He is a musician
like I've never seen before. And probably will never see again.
Zema: Yeah, I think he's 1 of the most underrated artists out there. What's next for you musically?
ZG: I have no clue what God has for me next. I know mentally & spiritually, I must stay content in where God has me in the lowest of lows. Just continue to work hard in music & message and watch what the Lord
does; that my motivation.
Zema: I hope all the artists reading this are paying attention because that's what God is looking for. What producers/artists are you working with?
ZG: I'm working with "D-Flow" on my 1st project, coming out late June/early July. The artists I'M working with? I cant tell ;-)
Zema: Geeked! Do you have any other talents, music or otherwise, besides singing and playing the guitar?
ZG: I draw! I started out sketching pictures of animals & baseball players. I also play piano.
Zema: You're just loaded with talent, aren't you?! How would you describe your artistic style?
ZG: Hmmm. I've thought about this a lot. My musical style is a mixture of [the] many styles I grew up listening to. Its new school/old school/Hip-Hop/R&B all in one! Lol
Zema: Dope mixture! What are some of the topics you plan to tackle in your music?
ZG: I want to tackle lust. I believe its one of the main issues both men and women deal with. IM a victim of a pornographic past. I still struggle with the thoughts of it today. Another topic I love singing about is "exit
doors" example, when a fire takes place in a building, the way to survive is finding an exit door. U get the gist? ;)
Zema: I do get it and that's a topic that's near and dear to my heart as well because I also see how it plagues the Body [of Christ] and I don't think it's talked about enough either. To close, what is your main goal as an artist?
ZG: My main goal as an artist is to be an artist. I want to be the best of the best. Why? Cuz I want money, fame, and power? No. Cuz my Lord said IM a co-heir to HIS throne. Is that not the best? By wanting to be the
best, that pushes me to go harder to get the message of Christ to the masses. That's what the Lord wants from me!
Excellence is definitely crucial when it comes to art, so that's a top goal to pursue. Thanks, ZG!
