Crucial Asks "Is “Chopped & Skrewed” DEAD!?"

Many of us remember bobbing our heads to Lecrae’s ever-so-popular “Ridin’ wit my top down, listening to this Jesus Musik” from his sophomore album “When The Music Stops”.  I’m willing to bet a lot of cats are STILL vibing to that southern-style “chopped and skrewed” sample that continues to bump like an angry gorilla beating on trunk of your car.  And there were even some good underground hits that dabbled in the C&S department such as Flavor Radio’s top 40 hit “City on a Hill”, put out by Legacy of the former Flavor Alliance Media Group.  But as the years have pressed on to more innovative production quirks such as the (overused) Autotune vocal effect and other trance-hip-hop robotic-type voices, it seems as though we’ve almost forgotten how fun and intriguing a track could be with a little chopping and s-l-o-w-i-n-g down…

{loadposition contentad}

Or have we?....

Crucial (of Beat Lab 7 Productionz) decided to put this one to the test.  “I’ve always wanted to experiment with the whole C&S concept but never found a good opportunity” says Crucial who is still heavily on the grind when it comes to making beats and fueling other artists with SOLID production.  “And I’ve never been the type of cat to just jump on the bandwagon without first making sure that I can ride with it; no matter HOW popular the trend seems to be.”

Well it looks like Crucial finally found his “golden ticket” with the new hit single “PROPERTY OF JESUS” (which, by the way, features a SICK, jaw-dropping verse from One Route Entertainment’s D-MAUB!).  Apparently Crucial got this idea from a t-shirt (oh the many ideas we can get from a t-shirt these days) that simply had “Property of Jesus” woven on the front.  The next thing you know, he’s back in the lab producing a FIYAH beat and lacing it with a voice so DEEP it would make Darth Vader wish he had a bigger mask.

So is “Chopped & Skrewed” really a dead concept?  Or has it just been resurrected to a new life?  Have a quick listen to this BANGIN’ new joint and decide for yourself.  After all, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead and He DID SAY that we would do even greater works……………amen?  ;-)

God can use whatever He wants...

...bottom line. If we don't think it's effective or even relative. At the end of the day what we think really does not matter. If God spoke through a donkey, he sure can speak through C&S music smilies/grin.gif.

Yo, U know whenever there's a hot topic I gotta jump on these boards. I'm feelin' my man DJ Jesus Beats:

What seperates this from the secular is that the music edifies God, not Satan.

The bottom line is, too many artists (Christian and secular) tend to jump on the hottest trend when it pops off instead of seeking God for originality. I know I've caught myself saying, "Dang! I gotta do a track like ______!" However, The Lord sat me down and showed me that He's called me to a specific purpose and plan. When we try to force the hottest trend or newest sound into a song, it simply doesn't work. Therefore, Chopped & Skrewed, AutoTune, Sratch, or any other style will never die. We just need to be careful not to murder them...

Is not for everybody
written by DJ Primo, July 13, 2009
The hooks chopped & screwed can be tolerated by most people if it's done properly. The whole song chopped & screwed you either like it or you don't.

The only reason I became a DJ (now I know because of God of course), but it was basically because I wanted to hear some Christian Chopped & Screwed Music. The Lord found me at a very early age (17 years old) and I wanted to glorify God through the music I was listening to, that's how it all began and now I do it because I personally love it and I understand that it can be used as a tool to minister to people. If God can use a donkey, He can use a slowed down track. If you don't want to hear it or don't like it, then thank God you are in the land of the FREE and home of the.... you know the rest.
Even some of my local Houstonians are not fans of Chopped-N-Screwed. So I KNOW is not for everybody.
Im a fan only because of...

DJ Primo! The guy does outstanding work! Thank God for him! After growing up in ATL and then moving to TX a few years ago... I wasn't trying to hear anything TX style!!! Eventually after being exposed to the secular music here,it got repetitive and the style grew on me. When I heard that DJ Primo does it and its laced with kingdom music.... WOW! I became an instant fan!

I respect your comment, its cool and your honest. I too am not a big fan of Chopped and skrewed, but when DJ Primo does it, it dosen't take away from the edification of the song. What seperates this from the secular is that the music edifies God, not Satan. Yes DJ Screw might have been the king of it for secular, but he died doing it for glorifying Satan and not from a Heart Attack but from sipping on that sizzuyrp which lead to a cardiac arrest. I pray too that people will learn from what we call untimely deaths but all of these brothers did their music for the wrong reasons. I pray that this form of Christian Rap continues cause it is used as a tool for many of our brothers and sisters in the south who love this style of music. It goes the same for the up north vibe, midwest flow and the west coast funk. Not all of us will like a certain regions style in their music, but if its being used to 100% glorify Christ and not the rims, girls, clothes, guns, drugs, sex, or death, then I'm all for it. God bless you fam and DJ Primo, Go ahead and slow this comment down!!! LOL

it sounds tight on the hook though, like on the Dope Tales or Windows Down but not a whole song or tape, not for Christian music.
LOL at christian rap being chopped and "Screwed"
written by Steve, July 13, 2009
In my secular life i had (and still do own) 100s of DJ Screw tapes but the guy died of a heart attack in 2000 it stayed mostly underground, then Still tippin dropped in 05 and it was big for a minute but died again, I wasnt never trying to hear no Michael Watts, Ron C, Big Baby, none of that, "if DJ Screw didnt do it, it's not a screwed album".

Anyway kinda makes me laugh that they sell Christian rap chopped and "Screwed" I dont think Promethezine is very Christian LOL,

RIP DJ Screw, Big Moe, Pimp C. I hope people have learnt from these deaths.

and i aint trying to disrespect DJ Primo, as long as there are Diary Chapters dropping out the shop it will always be alive in H-Town and TX but internationally and worldwide it is over for C & S except for the few real Screw heads,

There are many DJ Screw imitators, do ya thing but me personally, i dont wanna hear Christian Rap Slowed down.
Never Dead
written by DJ JesusBeats, July 13, 2009
Skrewed and Chopped is never dead, well DJ Primo beat me to the punch! But he's the only Christian DJ that does it professionally. If you want your album chopped and skrewed then please hit him up at:

www.DJPrimo713.com

I remember hearing KNINE's Born Again album Chopped and Skrewed and wondered who did the whole work and sure enough it was this Kat. So to answer the question Chopped and Skrewed will never die, the same for AutoTune. Just a word of advice for all artists who try to venture into these arenas for a possible song. If you are an amateur, Please seek a professional to do this for your song!!!
