Von Won Signs to Mainstream Def Vibe/Asylum/Warner Bros.

Houston, TXUrban Christian artist Von Won’s next album, All-American Felon, will be recorded for the mainstream Def Vibe rap label and distributed through Warner Bros./Asylum Records. This puts Von Won in a category with only a select few Christian hip hop artists (B.B. Jay and Mr. Del come to mind) whose music and ministry garnered enough interest from a secular company willing to invest in their work.

“I’m blessed to have this incredible opportunity and promise to continue to purse God’s will as we move forward,” Von said.

The official contract signing was held at Von Won’s 4th Fridayz Fellowship on February 26 with more than 300 people in attendance. Def Vibe’s president and CEO Money Mark was there to deliver and accept the final paperwork.

Def Vibe has been responsible for much of the national exposure and success of Houston’s rap scene since 2003. The entertainment company has coordinated events, marketing, and promotions for names like Twista, Scarface, and Lil Boosie, and recently secured BET 106 & Park airplay for Young Problems’ video to “Boi” featuring Gucci Mane and Mike Jones.

Although Money Marc and Von Won’s relationship tracks back to their high school days, Marc said it was Von’s work ethic and drive that made this potentially risky signing worth while.

“I only get into business with guys that are willing to give it all they have,” Marc said. “With Von, you know you’re always getting 1000%.”

“I was also impressed with his ability to bring people out to support him. That’s a big part of being a successful artist and Von has proven that he can mobilize the masses.”

With such a move, it’s almost a given that some Christian critics will question Def Vibe’s motives and wonder if Von will be pressured to change his content in order to secure additional airplay. However, Money Marc has an answer for them.

“This isn’t even about money – especially since it’s so hard to make in today’s music industry,” Marc said. “I’ve had my eye on this movement for several years and researched it. Tre9 (CEO of Much Luvv Records and co-owner of DaSouth.com) is a friend of mine and I’ve always told him that when the time was right I wanted to use my contacts on the other end to bring some folks back. I just want to use my talents to glorify God.

“And we have no aspirations of changing who Von Won is or what he says or what he’s about. We certainly want him to do records that will work across the board, but he’s going to retain creative control.”

Von also has a response for those worried that with Def Vibe, he might water down his message and just be a “positive rapper.”

“I am definitely a holy hip hop artist! Given today’s music climate, somebody has to take a stand and that’s who I am,” Von Won said.

Def Vibe is even creating a gospel division and making Von Won an executive to scout additional talent for future releases.

As such, Von Won will be adding yet another title to his multi-hyphenated job description. He’s already CEO of his own Southern Xposure Entertainment label with several album releases, a solo artist, TV video show producer, husband, father of two (with one on the way) and recently accepted a full-time youth pastor position at Restoring Hope International church in south Houston. How will he manage being pulled in so many different directions?

“In the past, I’ve been the most successful when I’m the busiest,” Von said. “It was in those lazy, empty time spans when I found myself getting into trouble.”

That trouble includes a 2006 felony conviction for resisting arrest and evading with a vehicle when his car was stopped and drugs were found inside. It also led to multiple tazings from police and became the catalyst for Von to change his life and whole-heartedly pursue Christ.

However, all of that seems like a contradiction for this near Ivy League, Rice University graduate who was an All-American track star.

“I’ve been given both of those labels (All-American and felon) and they’re on two very different ends of the spectrum,” Von said. “I’ll be exploring some of that on my next album and hope that people know I’m more than a title. I want them to see me as a man of God.”

All-American Felon is scheduled to drop from Def Vibe/Warner Bros./Asylum Records on August 31, 2010.

Yo Von, I told you that it was HOT!! Remember our Youtube messages? lol Anyway, I guess, in the grand scheme of things, getting mentioned on the "Dasouth.com Best of 2009" isn't as major as this (Not taking a shot at Dasouth, I love this place!)! I told you man, you're going places, and taking that gospel with you!!

@Lavoisier, brother... I seriously love when you add your thoughts to these message boards, you are very wise and have a way with words Big Homey! smilies/grin.gif

Sketch, thanks for the kind words and understanding. I forgive you for the poor wording. lol

I am very happy for Von Won and pray that the label sticks to their promises.
Yeah man!

I wanted to jump on here and offer my congratulations to Von Won, he definitely can bring some Light to the dark scene out here. I will stand in intercession with the rest of The Body for Von as the Lord prepares to use him in a big way.

My only suggestion, tell Def Vibe to push that "I Missed It That Day" video to the major outlets! smilies/smiley.gif If they want to re- record it or whatever, fine, but that can touch some hearts (co- signing Lavoisier).
ALL CAPS SHOUTS
written by Sketch the Journalist, March 02, 2010
I also agree with Hiprocksoul that Von should lay off the all caps. On the net, it does come across as shouting.

Von does it e-mails to me too so please don't take any personal offense.

You'd think a Rice grad would know how to untap the CAPS LOCK key though, eh? smilies/grin.gif

Even a "Journalist" makes mistakes
written by Sketch the Journalist, March 02, 2010
Fellas,

I'm the one that wrote the article and perhaps the sentence about other labels is misleading.

Hiprocksoul is a good brother with a lot of familiarity with this genre so he's probably on point about knowing of other guys that have received mainstream interest that I'm not aware of.

For example, someone mentioned Mouthpi3ce, who is someone that probably went under my radar.

My intent was simply to imply that Von, along with BB Jay and Mr. Del, are the first two that come to my mind when I hear about a Christian rapper getting a secular deal. I tried to leave myself some wiggle room with the "come to mind" comment and by saying "a select few" because I figured there were some guys that I just didn't know about or possibly overlooked.

So, my apologies if anyone took offense to my poor wording.

I do think this is a great opportunity and will be praying for Von as he moves forward that he can continue to hide behind the cross and let Christ be seen. I hope everyone else reading will do the same.

And thanks for keeping me on my toes. Even a seasoned "journalist" can make mistakes.

To Hiprocksoul...Silly Statement? I'm just sayin...
written by Lavoisier Cornerstone, March 02, 2010
Hiprocksoul, you said:
As far as the line, von won, b.b. jay, and mr. del are the only chh artists to get a secular company interested enough to invest in them" is a silly statement.

1. That's not what the article said though. It highlighted those 2 artists as "coming to mind" when thinking about the limited # of Christian Hip-hop artists with major label interest. It wasn't put forth as being absolute. Merely that of the limited amount that there are, b.b. jay and mr. del come to mind. Hence the term "come to mind".

If anything, your point has more to do with the exclusivity of the category rather than who was listed.

You contend that a many CHH artists have been offered major label deals. I think "many Christian rappers" having "TONS" of secular labels interested (with money and deal on the table, not just "in talks") is a bit of an exaggeration but ok, even if I give you that...

By your account also, the deals have been horrible. So if these "TONS" of deals offered to "many Christian rappers" have been horrible, and Von Won's deal is good, it actually, by your account DOES put him in an exclusive category b/c "many" Christian rappers have not (by your account), been offered "TONS" of GOOD deals.

And lastly, that's the first couple sentences. Isn't that a moot point in the grand scheme of this article and this news? That's what stood out to you in the midst of it all? That's somewhat telling.

And that point you made about:
"they don't jump on board because the deal is poor and they're smarter than the average "joe""

That does sound like it has some kind of suggestive language that implies that the aforementioned artist in the article (Von Won), some how may be "not as smart" as those other joe's you speak of. Even if you didnt mean it that way, that is how it kind of sounds.

Von Won, Congrats bro. I've used your song "I Missed That Day" to minister to my teenage daughter, and it made an impact. Bless you fam.

This joint is hot...Video is dope too.

Hey Von, I hope you didn't think I was attacking you. If you ever want to come to the dirty south to perform in Chatt I will support you 100%.. Whether that be housing, food or Playstation/360! I can tell by your reply that you're sincere, and I'm sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way, as that wasn't my intent.
response to Von Won
written by Hiprocksoul, March 02, 2010
Hey, you don't need to respond in all caps.. I feel like you're yelling at me. lol.

I wasn't dissing you by saying that many Christian rappers have passed on major labels.. It's just a fact that I wanted to point out.. A fact neglected by the author.

Personally I have a couple degrees from colleges.. Not quite as astute as Rice, but nevertheless, they took commitment. I wasn't even trying to say that you were dumb for taking a major deal.. My issue was more with the person that wrote the article.. Like I said, plenty of Christian rappers have been offered major deals, but turned them down for various reasons. The article is written in a way that makes it look like Von Won is the first Christian rapper of a select few to get the attention of a secular label.

COULDN'T DELETE LAST RESPONSE. WOULD IF I COULD, BUT I JUST THOUGHT THE COMMENT BEFORE MINE WAS TAKING A SHOT AT MY INTELLIGENCE. IN THE FUTURE I WILL LEAVE IT IN GOD'S HANDS. BUT LET'S CELEBRATE!! LET'S SPEAK WORDS OF LIFE! ENCOURAGEMENT!! IT HURTS ME TO SEE WHEN VIDEOS GO UP ON DASOUTH.COM AND PEOPLE WRITE COMMENTS LIKE "THAT WAS WACK!" MAN HOW CAN SOMETHING GLORIFYING JESUS BE WACK. IF IT AIN'T FOR YOU JUST DON'T WRITE ANYTHING. THEN AN ARTIST GETS ON HERE CUSSIN USING BAD LANGUAGE AND HE GETS CELEBRATED AND INERVIEWED BY ALL THE ONLINE RADIO SHOWS. REMARKABLE. MY BIG HOMIE GIFTED SAY BE ABOVE COMMENTING, SO THIS IS THE LAST ONE I PROMISE. KEEP ME IN PRAYER AS WELL AS THE ENTIRE GENRE AS WE PUSH THE MOVEMENT INTO MORE IPODS, SATAN'S BIGGEST TOOL FOR DESTROYING THE YOUTH! MUCH LUVV
Not sure
written by Hiprocksoul, March 02, 2010
I'm happy for Von Won, even thought I've never listened to him and I've been listening to Christian rap/secular and many indie Christian rap artists for years. As far as the line, von won, b.b. jay, and mr. del are the only chh artists to get a secular company interested enough to invest in them" is a silly statement.

There's been several other Christian rappers signed to major secular labels.. Also, many Christian rappers have had TONs of secular labels interested.. Yet they don't jump on board because the deal is poor and they're smarter than the average "joe".

I know personally several rappers who've done better staying indie than they would've signing to a "major label".. The person that wrote this article needs to research the many Christian artists who've had major label offers..

great job! u definitely deserve it, von won! can't wait to go to somewhere like best buy or fye, find your album, and purchase it in a secular store like that.

just out of curiosity to anybody who might know the answer: i noticed that the article said that von won, b.b. jay, and mr. del are the only chh artists to get a secular company interested enough to invest in them. but i heard that moutpi3ce's new album, "masterpi3ce theater" is being distributed by def jam. can anybody confirm this?
