DaSouth.com Stars: review-3-5

chrys-jones-no-name-mixtapeIt seems as if CHH artist are stepping it up even more in the area of mixtapes and although I'm still longing for more official mixtape releases in the traditional sense such as the DJ Morph releases the Chris Jones No Name Mixtape has satisfied my appetite for the time being as he attempts to capture the heart and true essence of a mixtape.

There may be many purposes to a mixtape in today's market but in the truest form there are two purposes:

1) Create awareness for an artist and

2) Keep the party going (the Holy Ghost Party of Course)

The Chrys Jones No Name Mixtape does just that, however, he clearly communicates and elevates Christ consistently throughout this “No Name” mixtape that bears his name. This is a 25 track give away (yes it is free) that you can listen to from beginning to end without skipping a track. In fact I did for three days straight.

When you first put this in your CD player or iPod you'll see that The No Name Mix Tape embodies the heart of the old school mixtapes. The intro is such a throw back to the days of old that Chrys took the time to ask his fellow peers to bless the Intro track.

From the start we receive greetings from D-Maub, Lunie 380, The Messenger and others. This is true mixtape style and I give kudos for this move. This sets the expectation for the rest of the CD and it does not disappoint.

There is something for every listener to enjoy. From sample heavy east coast beats, dirty south bangers, bouncy mid-west beats and slow paced chopped and screwed tracks. Chrys even manages to effectively serve up a Dip Set and a Hip-Rock banger tilted “Everything Part 2.”

Aside from the beat selection the CD is lyrically sound. Every line and lyric truly serves a purpose whether it is to glorify Christ on tracks like “Rep His Name” and “Christ Check” or to share the artist's shortcomings and be transparent on tracks like “Misunderstood” and “The Story.”

Although, Chrys Jones is not newcomer to CHH he may be a “No Name” to some but I believe that the listeners of this project will remember his name. The content is Christ-centered or centered around a life in Christ and is filled with word play, metaphors that make sense and heart felt lyrics. This is evident on the tracks “The Way,” “He's So Fly,” “Unreleased” and “So Far To Go.”

Although, there is use of secular beats on this project surprisingly they do not weaken the overall effect of the Christ centered messages that are being delivered. It is clear that each track was a deliberate choice and not an attempt to make something hot over a secular beat. Of course we can debate this issue until Christ returns but not in this review. :-)

This is a must for downloading and it is FREE!!! It will make you bounce, nod, lean, rock, shake, bring conviction, self-examination and restoration all in 25 tracks.

**Honorable mention for the “Country Boys” interlude featuring Young Semaj and “Kentucky”**

Chevist 3 -stars Question
written by stephen summers, May 09, 2009
Chevist,

Hi fam! That is correct. 3 because of the secular beats. To clarify I am not against the use of secular beats. Lyrically I think it is easily a 4 for real. Thanks for that feedback and I can make that a little clearer next time.

Beat wise I factor in the time, energy, effort and resources of putting together and picking quality beats for a project.

I checked out some of their original production as well so I definitely wait on the full length original project. I think it's gonna be a banger for sure!

Thanks for taking the time to read the review and comment!

Yah Bless!

Seems like a pretty good review! Why only 3 bars? Is that due to use of secular beats? Just checking. Yah bless!!!
