The JustHis League is more than a clever play on the name of the popular superhero DC Comic brand, The Justice League. Much like their fictional comic book counterparts, this supergroup is comprised of individual gifts and talents that hit the streets to fight the evil plaguing this world. In the place of Spiderman, Batman, Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern we have: Omega Sparx, Dae-Lee, JB Real, Cutright and a whole host of other heroes. Bring them together and you get the “one true Voltron crew”.

- In The Beginning: In keeping with the comic superhero theme, the project jumps off with a very dramatic narration backed by a post-apocalyptic movie score in the background. Sounds like a trailer for a summer blockbuster. Very well done!
- We Go In – GNC (feat. Omega Sparx & JB Real): Great song for a single. The beat has a very ‘BIG’ sound and could be classified as an anthem. Add in some aggressive rap deliveries from GNC and Omega Sparx and you got yourself a get-up-off-your-seat-and-get-hype track.
- Get Out My Way – Jay L: This song would’ve been so much better if the tempo of Jay’s flow was upped a notch or two. He raps with a very laidback cadence. I got no beef with that approach; it’s just that his flow sounds like he is in the ‘80s. Also it’s not very clear what he’s trying to convey in the hook – a repetition of the words “You better get out my way now”.
- Juggernaut 2.0 – Omega Sparx (feat. Cutright): The smash summer hit from Omega Sparx gets the JustHis League treatment and out comes a remix featuring another superhero – Cutright. Cutright manages to do the unimaginable – his verse improves an already outstanding beat. It made sense to include this track as it connects with the comic book theme. Standout line: “I’m still fighting the Beast like an X-Men villain”.
- As I Walk Remix – Dae Lee (feat. Omega Sparx): This is taken off the recent Dae-Lee Warm Up EP project. Teddy P delivers his usual brand of smooth and soulful boom bap. This is a perfect fit for Dae-Lee’s slightly subdued delivery. Omega’s gruff voice adds a pleasant variation to the track.
- Hard To Believe – Warborn: Quite an intimate song where Warborn is crying out to the Lord to help him in times where his faith is faltering. Sounds like a mix between Lecrae’s Praying For You and Kirk Franklin’s Help Me Believe. That’s a compliment, by the way.
- Used To Be This – SonRize: Whoever made this beat deserves a dap. The beat utilizes a smooth jazz sax sample and flips it into a pleasantly mellow instrumental. SonRize shares his testimony of what God saved him from with an unruffled east coast flow. A cool Sunday afternoon joint.
- Greater Is He – Messiah: What, you thought women can’t be superheroes? Dead wrong, buster. Not only does Messiah hold her own, but she manages to go harder than some of her male compatriots. I’m loving that multi-syllabic flow! Pity about the beat though – it sounds like it was made in the Ejay Hip Hop software package.
- Who The Heck – Camp55: It’s Camp55’s turn to come to the fore. His array of super powers includes a healthy dose of heavy 808s and chopped-n-screwed vocals. This is banging southern style song as it balances style and swagger with some insightful and clever wordplay – “I speak and walk it out ‘cause I can’t keep it in / They say ‘IMA BEAST’ but I’m Daniel in the lion’s den”
- 10. Los Lebrones – Glory: This beat could’ve done with some more work. It feels too flat, especially in the verses. Also, the dude singing in the hook is not the best of singers – just rapping would have sufficed.
- True Scribe – Crucial: This drop is from Crucial, formally of the Beatlab 7 production duo. I have always felt that Crucial is a better producer than he is a rapper. This here does nothing to change my mind. It isn’t explicitly clear why he is calling himself a ‘true scribe’ in the hook either.
- Heaven – Esau: Before a single bar is dropped, Esau - in an autotuned voice - likens Jesus to Willy. Funny. Save for the ridiculous intro, this song is good. It would be a great song if Esau rapped on-beat more often.
- Can I Get This Dance – Tawana Ross: The hook? Great. The verses? Not so much. The rapping in the verses is of the old school kind. Pleasant reggaeton-ish beat.
- We Takin Ova' – Havoc: What’s a superhero without his thumping crunk soundtrack? Havoc spits what sounds like the official JustHis League anthem. Other than the intro, this is the first track that makes mention of the group. Havoc absolutely shreds this banger to pieces with the confidence of a real comic book hero.
I love rap supergroups. It’s always exciting seeing individual talents coming together and transforming into one well-oiled machine. This JustHis League project is a machine alright, but it definitely isn’t well-oiled yet. I notice that some of these songs have been around before this tape dropped – so, in effect, making this more of a compilation project than a fully fledged concept album. Some songs stick to the theme and some don’t. Having said that, I can’t fault this project very much because it is quite enjoyable and encouraging…and because it’s FREE.
