Refining Faith consists of six spiritual sisters from Harlem. On December 15, 2007 Refining Faith was awarded a Tiffany Gospel Award for "Song of the Year" Group and has just recently been notified of their "Momentum" award nomination. Refining Faith has shared the stage with artists such as Donnie McClurkin, Cissy Houston, Vickie Winans, Hezekiah Walker, IN-A-WAY, just to name a few. Now, after six plus years of hard work, Refining Faith presents their 9-track album – “In His Time”.
- God Is So Good – The beat comes in with a little sequencer action & then Refining Faith pours their vocals onto the track. They simply introduce themselves by proclaiming that God is so good to them, even if he doesn’t do another thing, He’s done enough. They will praise Him for all that He has done.
- Trust – Their first song is more on the R&B tip. It reminds me of the good old R&B days in the early 90s with all those female groups. I really enjoy the vibe on this track and how they put the down the chorus. I was a bit hesitant after that intro, but now we are on the right track.
- Near The Cross – Gospel. A cappella. Yes indeed, these sisters have some harmonization skills to share. The thing I love about this track is how you feel the energy and spirit behind their voices. It reminds me of those big churches that are overwhelming to any child. But the essence and sound that resounds, consumes you with these deep warm feeling.
- In All Your Glory – Some more R&B please. “I can never repay you for all you’ve done for me.” Refining Faith has a lot to offer. Any choir would be blessed to have them. In fact, any church would be blessed to have them come out and sing. The more I listen, the more I would love to see them live. Perhaps they should release a live DVD.
- Perfect Praise – A little slower feel with the piano. Now this is Gospel! I don’t care how bad your day is. If you throw this on and just chill in calmness for a bit, you will feel the glory of God. How sweet it is to sing how great our LORD is.
- I’ll Never Say No To Jesus – This song brings me back to the style of the 90s. Refining Faith keeps it real and even offers a little commentary about what we can say no to; everything, except for Jesus. They are sure to reminds us that Jesus took away all our fears, and we’ve been searching for something real and genuine like Him throughout all our years.
- Can’t Win The Game – When a song is traditionally Rhythm and Blues, it sounds okay if it reminds of you a style from a different decade. But with the more upbeat songs, it can tend to sound a bit more dated. This song sounds good, but they just need better production on these types of songs. I would love this song if a hip-hop producer produced it.
- Commitment – Do you want to talk to Jesus? Do you want to tell Him something? Are you willing to admit you want to spend time with Him and be committed to Him and His unconditional love? Refining Faith wants to spend time with Jesus, out of everything they do. If our heart isn’t in it, if we want control, this relationship won’t work out. These sisters break it down for us. I’m sure most believers can relate to the lyrics in this song.
- Know That You Know – Classic R&B. Well, not classic Motown R&B, but classic as in 1990s status. If only Sean Combs got his hand on this group and did their production, then Refining Faith would sound rather flawless. I don’t disagree with their instrumental selection, but with their talents and their beautiful voices, they have more potential to work with. Lyrically, they have what it takes to move pews. Now, they just need the background music to push them over the top.
I found this project intimidating at first because it wasn’t the style of music I expected or wanted to hear at the time. As I played it in the background of doing chores, I became uplifted and spirit-filled. Most people would consider this music to be Gospel, or Rhythm and Praise, which it is. But I definitely would label it as Inspirational. We need more projects that are uplifting and inspirational. Sometimes we like to be amped up with beats, or we like to be convicted by theological lyrics. But we need a positive selection of songs in our listening devices. We need more music like Refining Faith’s in our lives. I feel we could compare this to other types of groups and R&B and so on, but on it’s own, for what it is worth – “In His Time” gets a 3 out of 5. I can say it’s average on the musical side in 2010. With the talent and potential, as most upcoming artists have, with the right production and engineering as well as mixing and mastering, groups like Refining Faith have the opportunity to grow and hit the mainstream with their message.
