Caleb McClendon aka Fog Walker, hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, recently released an EP titled “Generation X.” The EP is produced by Bishop Chase (B-Chase) sans one track “We Win” which is produced and features G-Status. This EP stays true to the sound of southern hip hop with hard knocks of the bass, quick snaps of the snare and anthem resonating choruses, but there are some creative stretches.
Opening the EP is“Generation X.” After listening to the track I was left a little underwhelmed, but I heard the passion in Fog Walker’s delivery and was impressed with the capacity of emotion he brought to the lyrics. His lyrics aren’t overly complex, but are real, raw and are easy for the listener to relate to. “Cash Out” is one of my faves from the project. Fog Walker just really seems in his element here. I love the horn call and the chorus is catchy. The production is nice not to intricate but has a lot of stacking of different sounds. Though the track may sound busy at times, everything plays off of each other very well. B-Chase seems to really know how to cultivate Fog Walkers personality in this track. This is a big step in the right direction for this EP, where track one left me worrying, I’m now back on with “Cash Out.”
Continuing to push forward, next is “God Won’t Let You Down.” This is where we hear some of that creative stretching taking place from B-Chase. The intro of the track may leave you thinking that you are going to hear one thing, but as soon as the snare and rhythm of the hi-hat hit, we haven’t deviated to far from the basic structure of the EP’s sound. This hip hop symphonic track is nice, not as busy and I like the vocal addition to the song, a nice break up from the chanting, anthem style of the other tracks. “Non Stop” starts off with a nice electronica riff, but in keeping with the southern hip hop sound a nice bass boom and an alarming horn call, keep this track grimy. Fog Walker continues his passionate lyrical flow. Delivering a message that no matter what may come “we can’t stop, won’t stop” (yea Bad Boy).
“We Win” produced by G-Status weaves well with the rest of the EP. Featuring another vocal addition courtesy of G-Status, I like the mix of R&B and hip hop here. An inspirational offering from Fog Walker, he sums up the reason why we should continue on this faith walk, because in the end, We Win. Bonus track “Mark 12:30” is that fire! Now this is my favorite track. Dope verses from J-Royal, New Life and Bishop Chase are great compliments to Fog Walker’s flow! The track is nice, starts out real simple and banging, and then other elements are incorporated that become a bit much (volume wise) but keep the energy and hype of the track going. This track can be performed live and the crowd would love it.
Overall this is a nice EP. For me personally this is my first time hearing Fog Walker and he did a great job with letting us know who he is musically and personally. There’s a genuine concern to see our youth make changes and choices in their lives to live for Christ and be an influence to others. The inspiration to continue on the faith walk is a constant need for a believer and Fog Walker does not come up short there. Fog Walker may have that southern hip hop sound going, but like I said earlier, he stretches the creative boundaries to infuse other sounds and elements. Fog Walker delivers a solid effort with the “Generation X” EP. After listening to the EP I would give a full album a listen to, as judging from “Mark 12:30” Fog Walker may have some tricks up his sleeve!
